The Best And Simplest Computer Virus Protection

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Many computer users live in fear of computer viruses. It is true that computer viruses can do a lot of damage that most likely could have been easily prevented – that is if they had a working up to date virus program.

First of all be reassured. Even if your computer is “wiped clean” or “wiped out” you may not be in the doghouse so to speak. If you use the computer mainly for browsing on the internet, then it is only a matter of a reinstall of windows to get you on the web again. Your computer is only a device to access the internet. It is as if you get a new phone to plug into the wall or a new TV to watch the channels that were there that were and are still there.

Your email most likely is safe as well. If you use a web based mail program like hotmail or yahoo to access your email – then your email is most likely still sitting on that company’s server in California, Bombay India or somewhere else in the world. If Microsoft goes bust, your lost email will be the least of your problems in today’s world. If you use a mail reader client like Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, then at the worst your new email is sitting safely at that computer mail server computer.

Next it can be can be said that we have gotten off easy with computer viruses. Well at least up the present. Computer viruses can be written by its developer to do anything the developer wishes. For the most part computer viruses have been relatively innocuous. The majority of the computer viruses that you will encounter, at present, in your career as computer user, are of the “Trojan” variety and are not that mean or destructive to your computer. . Trojan antivirus are computer viruses that patiently sit in wait for a signal from a control computer, somewhere in the world, to be part of a large scale computer attack on some remote computer to overwhelm that service and disrupt its function on the internet.. You may have heard such tales in regards to C.N.N. or Amazon having their internet service being knocked out of service maliciously. Believe it or not it is estimated that up to 50 – 60 % of most computers have these Trojan viruses sitting quietly and patiently in their computers and do not know and most likely will never know that they are infected.

The first rules of computer security is that if the computer is used at for storing delicate, sensitive or important data – then that computer should not be attached to the internet or have an internet connection. It’s as simple as that. If you don’t talk then you can never be accused of blabbing.

As an example there was a firm that was allowed access to very confidential government data as part of its business plan. . It was made very clear, by the government agency involved as a sponsor, that this data was most confidential. I f this information was somehow leaked or placed on the internet then dire consequences would occur. What could be a simpler message? And yet in this case, all for the convenience of the owner of the firm, the computer was directly attached to a fax computer. Even of that computer was only connected to the fax max machine computer for a split second that is all it would take for the wrong information to “get out”. Politicians follow the rule of deniability. Why shouldn’t you. ? Make your life trouble free. If the computer is nowhere near the internet in any way shape or form you can never be blamed. Simple as that.

The most important factor in computer antivirus protection is not so much the product used or installed – and there is no shortage of very reasonable computer antivirus products. The most important factor for computer antivirus security protection is that updates for the antivirus be done on a regular basis.

When you purchase a new antivirus product or complete a renewal product that is in essence what you are doing. It as if you are buoying a magazine subscription for the year.

By purchasing the subscription you are now entitled to antivirus updates for the coming year. New computer viruses are coming out “all the time”. It does you little good to be protected from last years plague. You need to be protected from the current viruses that are causing the havoc now.

Make sure that you either have a copy of an antivirus installed that has current virus definitions or if you purchased a commercial product that you have a valid subscription that allows you access to the current up to date virus lists. Next be sure that you run regular full comprehensive antivirus scans to detect and quarantine new and perhaps dangerous computer viruses. More featured commercial antivirus programs may do this automatically.

In the end most of life comes down to preparation and attention to detail. A major role of fire departments is not only to fight fires but fire prevention. Your computer antivirus protections scheme and program should be likewise

GPU computing – high performance computing at its best

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

A graphics processing unit (GPU) is a RISC processor used in video game systems and computers for calculating the graphical output for monitors. GPUs are used at manipulating and displaying computer graphics. GPUs are a part of mother board or they can come along with video cards. Graphic accelerators are a part of GPU also. High performance GPU computing involves solving advanced computational problems using supercomputers and computer clusters. GPU computing includes all tasks that a graphics processing unit can calculate.

In GPU computing the CPU calculations are replaced by Graphics Processing Units. Migrating large scale algorithms and entire kernel onto the GPU co-processors help in arriving at the answer much faster and thus decreases the processing time. GPUs are never a complete replacement for CPUs but complementary. Parallel operation of CPU and GPU has found to increase the performance. CPU’s offload the tasks which are better performed by GPU leading to high performance computing. GPU excel CPU’s in certain computational tasks.

A GPU’s processing power is mostly used while dealing with 3D scenes and video. The GPU computing for a graphics task such as rendering a 3D scene involves many stages like vertex processing, vertices grouping, fragment processing and mathematical operations. GPU computing is also known as General Purpose Computation on Graphics Processing Unit. Acceleration of video and picture editing, artificial intelligence and physics calculations come under the tasks of GPU computing.

GPU uses Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) to communicate with the mother board of a computer. Programmable shaders capable of manipulating vertices and textures are supported by latest GPUs. Very high precision color spaces, over sampling and interpolation techniques to reduce aliasing are also supported by GPU. GPU can process multiple independent vertices and fragments in parallel. Moreover a variety of computational resources are available on the GPU.

Multi-GPU’s are also available and are generally used in high-end home computers to accelerate computer games. Multi-GPU systems use more than one GPU. An example of multi-GPU system is Nvidia which can make a PC perform 250 times faster than usual. Not only that but by making use of the CUDA architecture which is made up ofhundreds of processors cores data set can be easily crunched via the application. General Purpose computing on graphics processing unit uses a GPU to perform computation in applications traditionally handled by CPUs. Additional programmable stages are included to make this happen. The general Purpose Computing on GPU(GPGPU)has cleared new ways in diverse fields like scientific image processing, oil exploration, linear algebra and 3D reconstruction.

GP GPUs are used in computer clusters, physics engines, FFT, audio signal processing, digital image processing, bioinformatics, scientific computing, DSP, neural networks and many more. GPU computing CUDA was developed by Nvidia. AMD has announced a super computer based on GPU which will be built of more than thousand GPUs. This supercomputer will have a computing power of one petaflop. The processing power of GPUs have further increased due to the advent of OpenGL API and similar functionalities in DirectX. Intel, AMD/ATI, NVIDIA and S3 Graphics are some of the players in the market who produce GPUs. Many companies are now engaged in researches to find out the further benefits of GPU computing.

What is the Best Laptop

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

The correct term should be what is the best laptop for the needs of the user, as there is a whole multitude of laptop makes – models with different specifications there really is no best laptop. To find the laptop that’s right for you we first need to ascertain the basics that just about every laptop should have – Wired and wireless networking capabilities – at least 2gb of ram and the hard drive should be a minimum of 80gb as just about every later version of operating systems, applications and games are larger than previous versions requiring more disk space, and today a 40gb hard drive is simply not large enough.

What else needs to be considered? Size / Portability – Processor or CPU – Operating system – Graphics – USB Ports – CD/DVD drive – Screen Size – Aesthetics – Laptop Role – Saving Money.

Size / Portability – the most common laptop screen sizes are between 13-15 inches, due to this it generally means the lowest prices, which is great if you are out to save some money, but if you travel around a lot then a heavy laptop could work out to be more in Osteopath fees than the total cost of the laptop, so if you travel a lot a small laptop is a real blessing, after all even if the laptop itself is not too heavy, by the time we add the mains adapter, a padded case, plus anything else you need to carry, it can start to get pretty heavy specially if carried around for a while. The same cannot really be said for 17” laptops, if your looking for something with a larger screen that is fine, but if you need to travel at all why not invest in a small laptop and put the extra money towards getting a 19” external screen which is bigger and can also be used in conjunction with the laptop screen, in effect giving two screens.

Processor or CPU – Processors have changed a lot over the past few years and now it seems many companies appear to be bolting on more and more processor cores. So at present a laptop needs to have a dual core processor or above. Dual core is the present standard with Intel’s Core 2 Duo and AMD’s Turion 64 x2, both are very good processors, but my personal opinion is AMD has the edge due to its cheaper price. If you don’t mind waiting and have the money, checkout some of the Quad core laptops coming onto the market.

The Operating system – If you want a laptop with Windows XP and you have found you can only purchase with Windows Vista (which is more common now) do not just presume that you can simply wipe away Vista and replace with XP, a lot of new pc hardware may not have XP drivers developed for it, this can create real headaches when trying to change over to XP.

Graphics Cards – it is generally not possible to replace or upgrade the video capabilities on a laptop computer, usually whatever video card is installed thats what your laptops stuck with, If you are into gaming or need other high end graphic performance the laptop will need a graphics card with dedicated memory, otherwise graphic performance of your application will suffer if it involves in depth graphics or high end gaming.

USB ports – You can never have enough, the average amount of USB ports on a laptop is 4 this may sound like plenty, but once you plug in peripherals such as a keyboard –printer– mouse – pen drive it wont seem so many, of course you could always purchase an external hub, as they are very cheap, but best option is to buy a laptop with more ports in the first place. Another point worth checking; Every laptop should have USB type 2 ports, but its worth checking this to confirm as USB 1 is around 10 times slower.

DVD & CD drive – A lot of the information given in regards to CD/DVD drives can be a little confusing terms such as Single and Dual layer – CD/RW DVD/Rom. Just about all new laptops now should have a Dual layer DVD writer drive this will do just about everything such as reading and writing to CD’s and DVD’s and reading and playing them too.

Screen size – this really covers the portability of the laptop again, the bigger the screen the heavier its going to be, there are also some nice screen technologies around such as tru brite which give the screen a glossy brighter look.

Aesthetics – what would you prefer a slow laptop that looks superb or a faster machine that looks like a brick? When looking for a laptop there is a wide choice available so you should not have to compromise on either, but as a general rule if you have to, compromise on the looks a little but not on the spec.

Laptop role – what will the laptop be used for, general Internet browsing – word documents, pretty much any laptop could do this standing on its head, so the world of laptops is your Oyster. Business applications – large spreadsheets etc, then mid power will be fine, do not need to worry too much about the graphic abilities and a shared memory type should be fine. Gaming or high end graphics require the most powerful processors and graphics cards, be prepared to dig deep if you want to play the latest games with all the extra effects switched on.

Saving Money – If you want a good laptop for a cheaper price you have a number of choices, the first of these is a second user computer, you can save a lot of money this way, but you need to know what your looking at or you could purchase a problem machine or one that is not all what it seems, plus unless it still has warranty left you simply take the risk.
Refurbished computers can offer good value for money, plus you get a warranty too.
Bargain basements – many large computer stores frequently have special offers which can be great value, check on websites for models that have been replaced by a newer model there are some good bargains to be had this way, but be quick as they sell very quickly. checkout more of our other articles at www.computer-adviser.com

Getting the Best Deal on Used Laptops

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Laptops have become a necessity these days. Used laptops are seen as a viable option to own a laptop at a very affordable price. These are the laptops that have been used by a person for sometime and sold for some reasons. Even if the laptop is used for a single day, it is called as a used laptop.

The reasons for purchasing used laptops are many. The main reason is that, it is available at a cheaper rate than the retail price of any new laptop. The availability of used laptops has increased owing to the recycling legislation that makes discarding of old PCs very expensive. Also used monitors are used for photo editing as the CRT monitors provides ultimate color purity than the LCD monitors for editing colors.

When purchasing a used laptop it should both serve functionally and at the same time save money. Doing a little amount of research by comparing and weighing various options from different kinds of sources will help in achieving the aim to buy used laptops at the best possible price. The price of the used laptop should coincide with the features. Internet serves as a good source for searching used laptops.

The working condition of the used laptop is of utmost importance. Normally it is not recommended to buy a laptop, which is more than three years old, for the reasons that either the system would have become outdated, or the user may not be able to run the latest applications and soft wares on it.

The features on the used laptops are the next important thing to be taken into consideration. The speed of the used laptop needs to be checked as used laptops run at a lower speed than the normal desktops with the same processor. Used laptop with less than 128 MB memory is not at all recommended for buying. The screen size, resolution and definition are other important factors in a laptop. Portability of used laptops is also taken into consideration. Laptops these days are getting slimmer and lighter. The weight of the backpack and, accessories should be kept in mind along with the weight of the used laptop to see if it is comfortable to carry. It is wise to purchase an extra battery while buying used laptops as the battery life of any laptop can be only for two years time.

While buying used laptops, checking should be done if it has a wireless connectivity, if not at least should have an external wireless card, since connectivity to the internet and intranet is very common these days. Select the one with a longer range and greater speed.

Check for a USB ports as older laptops may not have them. The more the USB ports the more convenient it is. Also the hard drive of the used laptop needs to be more than 20 GB. The higher hard drive space of the used laptop purchased depends on the budget of the buyer. These days, songs and movies are stored in the laptops requiring larger hard disk space. The most important thing is to buy a used laptop from a reputed dealer so that the purchaser can get a warranty on it.

Laptop Desks – The Best Models in the Market

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Despite its name, it is usually quite uncomfortable to use the laptop from your lap. Laptops produce an extraordinary amount of heat, slowly roasting your lap into a pair of fried drumsticks. To solve this problem many companies have come up with laptop desks that are designed to comfortably support your laptop while you sit on a chair, sofa, or bed.

Most of the laptop desks in the market right now are electrically powered. They are usually fitted with some small fans to cool the laptop and come in boring shades of black and white.

Among the many models available in the market, my favorite laptop desk would have to be Logitech’s Comfort Lapdesk. The lap desk is a high tech piece of cushion that shields your legs from the laptop’s heat. It has a cool, space-age design, which is good enough of a reason on itself for anyone to get one of these.

The Comfort Lapdesk does is not electrically powered and does not rely on any fans to cool the laptop. The lower layer of the pad is curved upwards, creating an air chamber that allows air to flow through. This process cools down the laptop. The curvature of the pad also creates minimum contact with your lap. This laptop desk is at contact with your lap at only four points, minimizing the transfer of heat from the laptop to your lap.

According to Logitech’s research, nearly 60% of all laptop users use their laptop while they are on a couch. Because of this, the design of the laptop desk is of such that it naturally tilts 12 degrees upwards. Here, you can comfortably use your laptop without having to bend your knee all the time.

If you are into something sturdy and rugged, our next laptop desk may be just the right choice for you. The Laptop Desk 2.0 is a heavy-duty pad that can support the largest laptops available. It measures at 20″ long and can be folded into half for to accommodate smaller laptops. It also bends upward with a quick flip to become a laptop stand.

A disadvantage of this laptop desk is that it weights a hefty 1.4 pounds, adding much load to your laptop bag. To make up for this, it is reasonably priced and much cheaper than many other laptop insulators out there. It also looks kind of cool with its black and rubbery texture. Its sturdy construction and hardy material makes this laptop desk very durable, perfect for all butterfingers out there.

The surface of this LapWorks model has deep groves in them, allowing air to flow beneath the laptop. This effectively cools the laptop by over 2 degrees when used for prolonged periods of time. Unfortunately, its design only provides a moderate amount of protection against the laptop heat. After approximately 20 minutes of usage, the user can start feeling the heat seeping through the padding. For maximum cooling, the user would need to tilt the desk to create an air passage below to cool the laptop further.

Laptop Heat Tips – Cooling Pad Cooling Mats Best Accessories for Controlling Laptop Heat

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Every year in this side of the world we face something called as the summer season, a season where the weather becomes erratic, temperatures climb and there are frequent cases of power outages. This is one of the prime times when it is necessary for you to ensure that this weather does not harm your laptop or give rise to any snags. Given below are some helpful tips for using laptop in hot weather: -

Ideal Laptop Temperature

Almost all laptop computers function effectually in the ideal laptop temperature range of 10-95° Celsius or 50-95° Fahrenheit. Don’t forget, if you happen to use the laptop in the outdoors, hot air, it should cool down before it is used in the interior temperature. Likewise, if you are using the laptop indoors, make sure you warm up the laptop according to the temperature outside. Like other electronic appliances, laptops too could develop functional errors due to heat. In these circumstances using a laptop cooling pad, or a laptop cooling mat would help you to easily cool down the laptop whenever it heats up, or needs to be brought to a particular level.

Keeping the Laptop Cool

One of the many warm weather laptop use tips is to utilize an ergonomic laptop stand for dispersing the heat laptop generates. Portable cooling pad and laptop stands, keep you safe from laptop radiation and laptop heat from time to time, but also safeguard the laptop from heat. Using laptop cooling fans would be suggested if you happen to use the laptop indoors for long hours. Laptop cooling fans and certain laptop cooling pads help in stabilizing the heat and stopping it from spreading to your furniture or your legs for that matter.

Pack Your Laptop Wisely

It is suggested that you use well-padded laptop cases, which have been strategically designed to keep the laptop insulated from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. If you plan to buy laptop case or any other laptop accessory like a laptop backpack, or a laptop tote, beach bag, or notebook cooling pad, make sure the accessory is efficient to sustain the heat of the laptop and the outside temperature as well.

Using Laptop Outdoors

Never keep your laptop in direct contact with sunrays, may it be shut down or still in use. If you do plan to use your laptop one glaring sunny afternoon, in the outdoors, you should use a laptop hood for cutting down on the direct sunlight on the laptop screen. Or, you can also use a laptop shield that will act as a bullet proof laptop shield to protect the laptop screen from being damaged due to the harsh sunlight.

Bear in mind that apart from the laptop exterior and laptop screen, the internal laptop parts like the laptop hard drive also stand a chance of developing snags due to exposure to the sun. Using laptop accessories like notebook cooling pad, laptop cooling stand, laptop mat or laptop cooling fans is the ideal way of protecting laptop from heat. You wouldn’t want your laptop to shut down due to over heat. Hence, use Laptop accessories as they are best protection for laptops.
